All roads lead to Cala for the 2nd annual Batandwa Ndondo Memorial Cup to be held from the 22nd to the 24th of September 2017!
This school sports tournament will remember and celebrate the legacy of slayed activist Batandwa Ndondo, killed by the apartheid police on the 24th of September 1985. Through the use of soccer, the tournament will aim to reinstate his legacy, and use this very legacy to inspire the youth in Cala. This will ignite in them a sense of pride for where they come from.
Cala boasts a rich history of sports that spans back well into the 50’s. As this tournament conveniently falls around Heritage Day, the tournament is the ideal vehicle to educate the local school athletes about the values of Cala’s freedom fighter Batandwa Ndondo and their history. It will also instill in them a sense of ownership that will drive them to pick up where this, and many other icons left off.
With boots strapped and players from Cala putting their best foot forward, school sports will be thrust under the spotlight. This all, in hope of an opportunity to market themselves to local football clubs in Cala. Those who attend can brace themselves for a variety of football brands and competitive edge on the field. The idea is that players from schools will filter into the local clubs, and work their way up to the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Those who show exceptional talent at the tournament, may have a trial arranged with a PSL or NFD club.
Building up from the success of last year, this tournament will further encourage sustainable soccer development and education. This way, the young players from Cala who participate in the tournament can walk away armed with skills, techniques and the discipline needed to grow and maintain a successful career in sport. The tournament will once again look forward to the same support that the community and surrounding schools showed last year – A sign that anything is possible when a community pulls together for a common cause.
Don’t miss out on a three-day event jam-packed with quality school sport, entertainment, education, and development – All proudly home-grown in Cala.
